Atorvastatin (Lipitor) is an inexpensive drug that lowers levels of cholesterol and trlycerides in the blood. Atorvastatin is the second-most widely used statin drug with 21% of the US market. For the sake of simplicity, there are two sorts of cholesterol; a 'bad' sort ed low density lipoprotein (LDL) and a 'good' sort ed hh density lipoprotein (HDL).
Atorvastatin may also reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients with risk factors for heart disease. As of 2011, it is available in generic and brand versions. However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience side effects. If people do develop Lipitor side effects, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
Atorvastatin is used along with a proper diet to help lower "bad" cholesterol and fats (such as LDL, trlycerides) and raise "good" cholesterol (HDL) in the blood.
There is very little difference in the medicinal properties of statins Crestor (rosuvastatin) and Lipitor (atorvastatin). Thomas Reilly has spent over 20 yeas working in various international pharmaceutical companies. While the accumulated safety record for Lipitor is excellent, as with all drugs there are associated side effects in susceptible patients that may become apparent only after long-term usage.
